We do not set compulsory homework in the Foundation Stage, but each day your child will bring home a book, and we recommend that every child in this stage reads to an adult for about 15 minutes. Children in the Foundation Stage will also bring home occasional worksheets

which consolidate what they have been learning at school that day. Again, although it is nor compulsory, we do suggest that children will benefit from completing these worksheets with an adult. We do expect all other children to complete homework promptly. The time that should be spent per evening on homework is:

Assessment
The school carries out formative and summative assessment on a regular basis to ensure that children are making progress and to help to identify the next steps in each child’s learning.
Parents have the opportunity to view children’s work and talk with teachers formally at least once every term. As well as termly reports on children’s progress, teachers also send home “Selected Assessments” regularly during the year.

Reading Tests are administered in the first and the third terms.

All children in KS1, 2 and 3 are tested on English and Math’s at the end of every term.

All children in KS 1, 2 and 3 will sit Statutory and Non-Statutory National Curriculum Assessment Tests for English and Math’s in Term 3.
This will be mainly for our own internal assessment of children’s progress and to monitor effective delivery of the curriculum, but we are using the British National Curriculum scales and levels for our assessments and we will shortly be reporting to parents in terms of NC levels which will enable parents to make direct comparisons between the progress of their children at Heathfield and similarly aged children working in schools across England.

The school also carries out external tests from the University of Durham, England. These Are PIPs, MiDYis and Yellis. These assessments are sent to England for marking and then the information is sent back and passed to parents.

Medicines
We are very careful that children needing to take medicine in school do so under the supervision of our School Nurse. You will first need to complete a” Medicine Dispensation” form with the nurse and ensure that the medicine is sent to school in a properly labeled container.
Illness
We have a trained School Nurse in the school throughout the day who will be able to deal with
all the minor cuts, bruises and falls that children inevitably have. If your child becomes ill during the school day and we feel s/he will be more comfortable at home, the nurse will contact you.
Young children often pick up minor ailments at school, and they can spread quickly. If you think that your child may have an infectious illness, please do not send them to school, as this puts many other children at risk. Please keep your child at home until the doctor confirms the child is ready to attend school again. In case we need to contact you in an emergency please ensure that the School Office always have an up to date

Educational Visits
Educational visits are an important part of a child’s education and visits will be planned for each year group. We will ask parents to sign a “ Visits “form at the beginning of the school year so that we can include your child in any activities that are necessary off-premises.
